Robot Swing’s weird.
Comprised of four of the most intriguing (and peculiar) music minds on the island, Robot Swing was formed out of a love of something ‘different’.
Featuring: Chao Yuan (Keys), Yu-Ming (Drums), En-Li (Bass) and Wei-Nong (Guitar), though light in age, this foursome had already put in an incredible amount of work prior to Robot Swing’s inception. Having been in several of their own successful projects (including 2016 Golden Melody Prize recipient, Blue Curtain), as well as produced/arranged/supported some of
Taiwan’s finest, including: Pei-Yu Hung (2023 GMA-Winner), Midi Yang (2022 GMA-nominated), Yi-Heng Chen (2020 GMA-nominated), LEO37 (2018 GMA-nominated) and folk-pop sensation, Misi Ke to name a few.
Robot Swing would eventually make their debut in the summer of 2022 with the jazz-funk-soul-hip-hop-rock-prog-folk infused System Booting… The album would be met with rave reviews as they would go on to receive nominations for Best Band and Best Single at the Golden Melody Awards, Best New Artist at the Golden Indie Music Award, as well as win Best New Artist at the 2023 Fresh Music Awards, while receiving the 2022 Album of the
Year selection by Blow Media.
Combining an elite skillset with boundary-pushing songwriting and incredible taste, all the while maintaining their ‘unique’ sense of humor, this Taiwanese quartet is set to make an impact for years to come. With their sophomore album set for a Spring 2024 release, be sure to keep your eyes and ears open for much more from these Robots.
Hip-hop
Born in Canada to Taiwanese parents, LEO37 moved to Taipei in early 2011 to get away from the cold. Having spent the previous 6 years as an independent recording artist, the grind of North American touring started to wear, and he needed a change. Once arrived in Taiwan, LEO37 spent the next 3 years learning the scene. During this time he established himself as an
integral cog in local events and either promoted, participated, performed or booked some of the islands biggest events including: Raekwon+Ghostface Killah (Wu-Tang Clan’s first ever appearance in Taiwan); Swing Your Neck (largest paid audience for a local hip-hop event in Taiwan at time of execution); Under Bridge (the largest recorded outdoor hip-hop event in Taiwan); #DYWM (the first ever event combining live musicians and rappers; 11 straight sold out events); and Nike’s first ever Taiwanese streetball tournament, ‘Nike Summer Nights’ (6-week street culture celebration featuring Jeremy Lin). Thanks to these experiences, it became increasingly evident that there was a void when it came to local support. Whether it: low wages, lack of performance opportunities, or even just restrictions to creative freedom, it seemed there was always someone or something that prohibited local artists from doing what they really wanted. And so, in an attempt to change the status quo, in 2014, along with his partner Yaobai (IP Lockers, 2013 BOTY World Champion) That’s My Shhh was born. A platform that
highlighted and showcased Taiwan’s own world class talent; provided fair and transparent compensation; and acted as a safe space where artists of all backgrounds and disciplines could connect and be creatively free, void of expectation.
In the years that followed, That’s My Shhh enjoyed 5 consecutive years of sold out shows, selling over 10,000 total tickets and generating over 8 million NTD (Approx $250,000 USD) in funds that were directly reinvested into the arts community,. Meanwhile, as an artist, LEO37 went on to release his Taiwan debut, Be Well World, receiving several shortlist selections and award nominations including ‘Best Band’ at the 2018 Golden Melody Award; and most recently has experienced a similar run as Executive Producer for Robot Swing’s debut album, System Booting… which not only garnered those very same GMA and GIMA nominations, but also won Best New Artist at this years Fresh Music Awards, as well as receiving Album of the Year selection by Blow Media.
Now as an elder statesman of the scene, LEO37 has diverted the majority of his attention towards the growth and upliftment of the next generation with programs like: That’s My Jam, Let It Bang!, Only Speak Truths, and others that all focus on providing the next generation of musicians, dancers, beatmakers, engineers, etc with bigger platforms and greater opportunities. However, you can still expect to see him pop up now and again with something to bounce to.
